African Caribbean Club ...650-7577

Meeting: Tuesdays @ 6:00 PM in the ESC (VU 420)

ACC's goal is to first educate one another within our club about our different cultural upbringings and backgrounds. Once we have accomplished this we can then share that knowledge with fellow Western students. By doing so we assist in the ongoing journey to spread cultural awareness.

We, the members of ACC, are dedicated to representing Africa and the Caribbean Islands in a positive light and are determined to eliminate the unfair labels and stereotypical views of our homelands. Africa, for the most part, has been depicted as and AIDS infested, war torn, hunger struck continent by the mass media. Although these are issues that face some African countries, there are many positive aspects of Africa and its people that America will never be able to view on television.

As students whose own identities continually cross boundaries that historically have divided populations and cultural groups and whose intersections of identity are often not reflected by the dominant society, we seek to create a safe space to explore the politics of identity and race as a social construction in both a private and public atmosphere. We seek to educate ourselves and our community.
